Sleep formed in Brighton in 1989 from the ashes of the bands WHY and the Immolato Tomatoes. They quickly became a tight live outfit playing a fresh style of melodic hardcore akin to The Descendents or Token Entry. Early positive response from supports to such bands as The Joyce McKinney Experience, The Libido Boyz and Leatherface helped raise the bands profile and garner them a support slot on Bad Religions' "Against The Grain" UK tour, and interest from the late 80's UK record label Meantime.
By mid-1990 they had released their first single on Meantime and by the end of the year had laid down their first (and sadly only) long-player.
The band continued to gig regularly as well as venturing into other areas; Allen took up bass and backing vocals for Brighton '77-style female-fronted punks 'Suspect Device' whilst Danny and Sam formed 'Close Call', a New York SxE-type band, with two members of the B.B.M.F.'s, a popular Brighton band at the same time.
Educational demands curtailed any further releases (Sam, Danny and Jamie were still only 18 at this time!) and the band split in 1991. Allen then went on to join Frankenslag, a Ramones-influenced Brighton punk band, whilst the remaining members continued their schooling.
Sam recently played with Brighton Hardcore band Abandon Ship.
