Immolato Tomatoes
It all started way back in '87. I met Mike at a gig ,told me he had a band and was into 7 Seconds, Husker du, Minor Threat etc. and needed a singer. It was an interesting mix of people, Bridget the bassist was older and rather timid looking and Paul was a quiet bloke who used to drum in a punk band oop north!
So, in typical punk spirit, after writing three songs and doing a Minor Threat cover, we were ready to gig. Over that year we played nearly every week supporting bands like 'Disorder', 'The Hard-Ons' and legendary hardcore Italians 'Negazione'. We even did a gig in Hastings supporting a deaf poet with an audience of bemused hells angels who very nicely helped us put our gear in the van. We then recorded a live tape and released it with local punk band 'Why?' featuring Sam from 'Abandon Ship', 'MTA' and 'Sleep' fame. We also played several gigs with 'The Stupids' and became good friends with them, to the point that Mike filled in on guitar when Ed couldn't make it.
The last gig we did was at the Urban free festival in '88. After that the band just fell apart. Mike started a new band called 'Snorkel'. Bridget had children and moved to Australia. Paul disappeared off of the radar totally. I think we were the first punk band in Brighton to be influenced by US and European punk bands (not forgetting Eastbourne's 'Vulcan Death Grip' though, who were there before us).
But the story doesn't end there...
In 2003 Mike and myself played an Immolato Tomatoes unplugged gig supporting Kevin Seconds, which was lots of fun. We were older with less hair but we could still jump around and make arses of ourselves. Isn't that the point of punk rock in the first place?
Thanks to Allen Silburn for the band history
