It was a warm summers evening in 1986 when Totenknopfnerbande had their 1st practice in an Uckfield fishmongers. Myself (Johnny), Brendan on keyboards, Rick on Drums, Richard on Vocals, Nathan on Backing vocals and Joe hitting things.
Fast forward a few weeks. After a couple of 'gigs' Jumping on stage in a Sex Pistols stylee, just grabbing instruments and playing, the chaff seperated from the wheat, the name was translated into English, Deathshead Formation, and being a Johnny i got the name. We also got our 1st proper drummer. This is what i'd call
JDF mark 1
Johnny Deathshead - Guitar
Nat King Dole - Vocals
Bren Gunn - Bass
Tommy Danger - Drums
A set list of appalling songs such as
f**k Off
I've Got Aids (i read it in the sun)
Dead Ted (Do not die whilst i'm alive)
Shep (An ode to the departed Blue Peter dog. (John Noakes gets into necro-beastiality in this)
Brought us much notoriety. A successful tour of Sussex followed. We were banned from Lewes after Bren pissed into a font. Myself and Nat then hit upon the 'Bad Bands' idea. An absolute success, still holds the record attendance at the (old demolished) Zap club.
Blah-Be-Blah! We got offered to support Anti-Sect at the Richmond. Being nutse on guitar, we roped in John Boozewell. After being gobbed off the stage, we nearly split. Well Tommy did, he moved to Switzerland.
Loads of temporary drummers followed, Nat was sacked for singing Velvet Underground lyrics. We picked up a new drummer, Simon (far too sensible a name), he had his debut with us supporting Negazione at the Richmond, (Negazione were spotted with their hands over their ears and running for cover)
]
So bollocks to that, time to get serious.
JDF mark 45
Johnny Deathshead - Vocals / guitar
Bren Gunn - Bass
Evil Dougal Spliff (sounds better than Simon) - Drums
Caddy - Lead Guitar
Jon 'Pretty Boy' Austin - Rhythm Guitar
We dropped the 'JOKE' act for a fresh (at the time) metallic-hardcore sound, political lyrics to boot! but were still nuts!
After recording 2 demo's and playing about a 100 gigs, it was time quit.
That final Zap club gig will never, EVER, be forgotten.
During the 4th (yes, 4th) encore, during 'No Government' I felt my head go backwards. I felt a bit dizzy, so i passed my mic to Rich (Suspect Device). I touched my head, looked at my hand. BLOOD! I looked at my chest, lots of blood. Some naughty person had split my head open. After refusing all first aid treatment, apart from a dab of Savlon. JDF was over.
Thanks to Johnny Deathshead for the info and pics.
